Ten Plainview ISD educators were recognized during the April meeting of the Plainview ISD Board of Trustees as recipients of mini-grants awarded through the Plainview Chamber of Commerce Education Committee.
The Plainview High School A Cappella Choir and Varsity Treble Choir brought home sweepstakes awards at for UIL Concert / Sightreading Competition held at Estacado High School in Lubbock on April 3. Sweepstakes, by UIL standards, indicates a Division 1 or superior recognition for both a concert performance and sightreading ability.
During a Special Called Meeting on April 11, the Plainview ISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously to name Dr. H. T. Sanchez as the lone finalist for the position of Superintendent of Schools. In accordance with state law, the district must now wait 21 days before offering Dr. Sanchez a contract.
Plainview High School senior Patrick Ceniseros was selected from 10 nominees as the 68th recipient of the LaVern Roach Award, the most prestigious recognition and the highest honor given to PHS male graduating seniors. The award memorializes world-renowned welterweight boxing champ LaVern Roach, a 1943 PHS graduate who died in 1950 from injuries received during a boxing match in New York City. Roach’s widow, Evelyn Roach Trice, established the award after his death to promote the lifestyle her husband embodied -- clean living, good citizenship and sportsmanship.
Following a vote by the PHS student body, Plainview High School graduating senior Trini Perez was named as the first recipient of the Nelda McQuien Laney Award. The award, established this year in memory of the “First Lady of West Texas” Nelda McQuien Laney, recognizes a senior girl who is in good standing at PHS, exhibits the traits of leadership and good citizenship, and is involved in student organizations at Plainview High School.
